Thuraya offers stand-alone satellite phone handsets, SatSleeve adapters for the iPhone, and small portable 444 kbps broadband IP data terminals. Thuraya provides satellite coverage over most of Europe, northern and central Africa, the Middle East, central and southeastern Asia, the Indian subcontinent, Japan, and Australia (see Coverage Map below). Thuraya handsets provide voice, 9.6 kbps dialup data, fast GmPRS IP data, and fax service. GmPRS is always-on internet access billed by the MB of usage and has best case upload speeds of 15 kbps and best case download speeds of 60 kbps. Some Thuraya handsets, like the Thuraya XT-DUAL also GSM cellular service.
If you have a GSM-cellular capable Thuraya phone such as the HNS-7201, SG-2520, or Thuraya XT DUAL, you will have additional GSM cellular coverage in many countries. Different regional operators charge different rates and some features of the Thuraya phone may not be supported by all GSM operators. As a rule, GSM operators in third world countries charge more for calls than the cost of Thuraya satellite-mode calls.
